Our Story: The Sicilian Deli
Here’s a little more from Carlo and the team at The Sicilian Deli about their journey:
“Our journey began nearly a decade ago, when Stephen and Carlo met in Sicily. Stephen, on holiday on the sun-soaked island, crossed paths with Carlo, who was soon about to embark on his own journey to London. What started as a chance meeting quickly blossomed into a deep friendship, grounded in a shared passion for food. Stephen, a former chef, and Carlo, who grew up surrounded by the art of Sicilian pastry making thanks to his father’s work as a top patisserie chef, soon discovered that their love for exceptional ingredients and culinary craftsmanship united them.
Years passed, and Stephen found himself regularly visiting Sicily. During these trips, he couldn’t help but notice something missing in the UK: the rich, authentic taste of tomato sauce that he remembered from his time in Italy. Why, he wondered, was the tomato sauce in UK supermarkets so far removed from the fresh, vibrant flavours he experienced in Sicily?
Determined to recreate that taste, Stephen and Carlo teamed up with Salvatore, a local Sicilian farmer and grocer, to craft a tomato sauce like no other. Together, they created a sauce made with 100% ripe Sicilian tomatoes, grown naturally in the island’s fertile soil, kissed by the sun and nourished only by the purest water. No preservatives, no sugar, no artificial colourings—just the true essence of Sicily in every jar. And we personally know the producer of most of our own branded items. They come from my hometown so we really know where our products come from and can make sure they are made by using the best ingredients.
The sauce was an instant hit. But Stephen and Carlo knew this was just the beginning. They wanted to share this extraordinary taste with the world. So, they opened their first deli shop in West Dulwich, where they could bring the best of Italy to the local community. As demand grew, they opened a second store in Herne Hill, and now, we’re excited to launch our online shop, bringing the flavours of Italy straight to your doorstep.
Our mission remains clear: to offer the best Italian produce possible. We work tirelessly to source top-quality products made by skilled artisans, from the finest olive oils and balsamic vinegars to the most delicious pasta and specialty foods. Every product we offer is a testament to the tradition, passion, and craftsmanship of Italy.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. We hope to bring a taste of Italy into your home and share the flavours we love with you.”
Meet Our Producers:
We source our products from trusted local suppliers who share our passion for quality and sustainability. Here are a few of the dedicated people behind The Sicilian Deli’s exceptional offerings:
- Peppe: A passionate Sicilian farmer, Peppe is dedicated to producing the finest wheat, olive oil, and legumes. His love for agriculture runs deep, with legumes being one of his standout crops. Quality is at the heart of everything he does—he values producing less, but always the best. For Peppe, farming is more than a job; it’s about honouring Sicilian traditions and cultivating excellence from the land.
- Salvatore: Our tomatoes are grown by Salvatore, our farmer, who plants each seedling by hand and then handpicks each ripe tomato. The plants are watered with natural spring water from a spring on the farm. We cook our sauce in a local kitchen with tomatoes picked only at the end of the Summer, meaning that they are perfectly ripe and need no artificial preservatives or additives. This is how sauce has been made over the centuries in Sicily.
- Max: Max, an olive oil producer nestled in the mountains of Sicily, is a master of his craft. His family owns an impressive 300,000 olive trees, spread across the rugged landscape, and they are always seeking to expand while maintaining an unwavering focus on quality. Together, we’ve worked to create the perfect blend of extra virgin olive oil, using three prized Sicilian varieties: Nocellara del Belice, Tonda Iblea, and Cerasuola. Max’s frantoio (olive mill) is more than just a place of production—it’s treated like a temple, kept meticulously clean and sacred, reflecting his deep respect for the olive-making tradition.
- Andrea: Andrea is an old-school Sicilian baker from Modica, a town famous for its unique chocolate. He runs a gelato shop, a bakery, and produces the iconic Modica chocolate, known for its grainy texture and rich, bold flavour. Passionate about his craft, Andrea works alongside his family to ensure every product meets the highest standards. Whether baking traditional pastries, making gelato from locally sourced ingredients, or creating the perfect Modica chocolate using ancient techniques, his focus is always on quality and authenticity. His shops, where each item is crafted with care and attention to detail, reflect his belief that passion and quality should be at the heart of everything he does. For Andrea, it’s not just about food; it’s about sharing the flavours of Sicily with the world, one bite at a time.
- Aldo: Aldo started as a hobbyist beekeeper but turned his passion into an award-winning artisan business. Since 1998 his farm has been ICEA controlled organic. The honey, fruits and nuts grow in clean air, soil and water at over 650m above sea level. No GMOs, preservatives, added acids, pectin, artificial flavourings, colourings or gluten.
- Gaetano: Our friend Gaetano makes our pasta with 100% Sicilian durum wheat. Gaetano has been producing Sicilian durum flour for decades. He supplies several bakeries and pasta makers in the region. He is passionate about good quality durum wheat and always uses the most natural and healthier wheat for his flour and pasta. The pasta is dried for 72 hours at 40°C, creating an excellent product. It is “Trafilata al Bronzo”, which means that it is extruded with bronze dies, creating a porous surface that makes pasta special for its extraordinary way of holding the sauce.
