How To Tell If You Need To Exfoliate

Published: 8 March 2024

Skincare is self-care, that’s for sure and certain, and looking after your skin from head to toe is one of the very best ways to make yourself feel amazing. There’s a huge amount to be said for the restorative powers of cleansing and moisturising on a regular basis, but there’s one little step that is often neglected… and that’s exfoliation.

Over time, dead skin cells can start to build up on both your face and body, resulting in lacklustre skin, clogged pores, excess oil production, spots, blackheads and so on.

What’s more, this can even mean your products are less able to penetrate the skin as deeply as necessary to provide the rich nourishment your skin craves, but regular exfoliation can help slough these dead cells away, leaving your skin fresh, rejuvenated and more radiant over time.

Your face and body can both benefit from exfoliation, but it can be tricky to spot when to do it, so knowing a few of the telltale signs that your skin is in need can be very useful indeed.

Firstly, look out for dry patches of skin or flakiness, as this is one of the biggest signs that exfoliation is required. When dead skin cells build up, they can form a barrier against your moisturiser, leaving your skin crying out for help.

The texture of your skin can also indicate that there’s a deeper issue going on. If you run your hands over your skin and it feels rough and uneven to the touch, you can address this by using a gentle scrub of some kind.

And if you’ve noticed that your skin is breaking out more regularly than usual, it could be because your pores have become very clogged up with dirt, oil and other impurities. Again, exfoliation is the key!
