Starting anything new can often be a bit overwhelming, so much so in fact that it’s not unheard of to avoid starting altogether! But with a little bit of research, prep and planning, you can give yourself all the knowledge you need to step into the unknown with confidence… even if that unknown is your very first Pilates class!
Newcomers to Pilates usually find that they start off in a group setting doing mat-based work, which usually start off with a warmup of some kind, either standing up or lying down on the floor.
To prepare yourself for the class, make sure that you wear soft, stretchy clothing that doesn’t restrict movement and mobility. Tighter clothes can be beneficial as they allow you to see your body and focus on form. Remember that there’s no place for shoes in Pilates, so either wear non-slip socks or just go barefoot.
As for equipment, your Pilates studio should provide mats but you can always invest in your own if that makes you feel more comfortable. Pilates mats are typically thicker than yoga mats – so just make sure you’re buying the right one so you can train in comfort. And don’t forget your water bottle as Pilates can certainly be thirsty work!
During the session, your instructor will talk you through the various exercises over the course of an hour, often on the floor but also standing up as well. The class is then closed with a series of specific exercises, including some stretch work.
The exercises in question will depend on what sort of class you’re attending. If it’s a balance class, for example, you may find that more standing exercises are involved, whereas a session that focuses on strength may involve the use of resistance bands.
You may want to let your instructor know that you’re a beginner before the class starts, so they can give you more focused attention if you need it.
